Medications may be placed in the box during regular hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. An officer may be called to assist individuals making a drop after business hours.
Citizens who drop off medications do not have to give any personal information.
The box will be emptied on a daily basis and when a substantial amount has been collected, the materials will be brought to an incinerator to be destroyed.
The Sheriff’s Office has obtained the proper permits through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for the collection of hazardous waste, which the unused medications are considered.
The goal of the program is to stop medications from being flushed down the toilet or put in landfills and to keep medications away from individuals who would abuse the medicines.
